RBA Set to Meet This Week — Here’s What to Expect

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is scheduled to meet this week for its second monetary policy meeting of 2025.

At its last meeting in February, the RBA surprised some by cutting the cash rate target by 0.25 percentage points. However, most economists and major banks aren't expecting another rate cut just yet.

When is the next RBA meeting?

The RBA Board will meet on Monday and Tuesday, with its decision announced at 2:30pm AEDT on Tuesday.

What is the current cash rate?

The current cash rate target is 4.1%.

Set by the RBA, the cash rate influences how much banks pay to borrow money — which in turn affects how much they charge customers for loans, including mortgages. That said, any change in the RBA’s cash rate doesn’t automatically mean your interest rate will change. It's still up to individual banks to pass on the change to customers.

When will interest rates start falling?

Unfortunately, there’s no clear answer. Rate changes depend on a mix of economic data, inflation trends, and global financial conditions. Until then, we have to rely on forecasts from banks and economic experts.

Here’s when the big four banks expect the first rate cut this year:

  • ANZ: August

  • Commonwealth Bank: May

  • NAB: This quarter (either this week or May)

  • Westpac: Sometime during the June quarter

How many rate cuts are expected in 2025?

Again, it’s all speculation — but here’s what the major banks are predicting for the rest of the year:

  • ANZ: One more cut in August, bringing the rate to 3.85%

  • Commonwealth Bank: Two cuts, aiming for 3.35% by December

  • NAB: At least three cuts, also predicting 3.35% by year-end

  • Westpac: Three cuts, with a forecast of 3.35% by November

When was the last time the cash rate was 4.1%?

We last saw the cash rate at 4.1% in October 2023, where it stayed for four months before the February 2025 cut.

Upcoming RBA meeting dates in 2025

The RBA has eight scheduled meetings this year. After this week's meeting, here are the remaining dates:

  • May 19–20

  • July 7–8

  • August 11–12

  • September 29–30

  • November 3–4

  • December 8–9

Note: The RBA has flagged that some meeting dates may change, including the November meeting, to avoid a clash with Melbourne Cup Day.
